ROOT CHAKRA

This whole week I have been talking about the root chakra in my yoga sessions and how life can blow us over easily if we don’t work on grounding ourselves, growing deep roots, that can hold us up in a storm…

and this morning on my walk I see this tree in my favorite park as if to illustrate what I have been talking about all week.

Here is the reading again I shared in sessions this week from the book “The wheels of Life” by Anodea Judith:

“Just as our houses are homes for our bodies, our body is home for our spirit. While attention may wander to distant places, we still return to the same bundle of flesh and bones throughout the entirety of our life. As our body interacts with the world, it becomes our personal microcosm of that world.

The task of mastering the first chakra is ultimately to understand and heal the body. Learning to accept the body, feel it, validate it, love it – these are the challenges that await us here.”

INSPIRATION FROM BRAHMA KUMARIS IN LONDON

“The heart is like a flower – unless it is open it cannot release its fragrance into the world.”

This is another basic like the root chakra. To be able to give and receive love I believe we need to have open hearts. The apparent “downside” of having an open heart is the “danger” of getting hurt. In my 20’s I had a series of really unhealthy relationships causing me to close off to protect myself from further hurt. It took me some time to learn to open and trust again and in recent years have opened myself up on a completely different level, learning to embrace vulnerability and the lessons that come with it.

In yoga we have many poses that help us to open the heartchakra. Also the essential oils I am using can help with the healing of the heart. Journalling is another good practice to work through stored up emotional package.

Lets open our hearts and release our fragrance to the world. This world so badly needs open hearts and open minds.

Wishing you all a relaxing and beautiful weekend.

Volunteering at Riverslea school

Last week I have been invited to teach the the 30 children at Riverslea school some yoga and how to do a handmassage with therapeutic essential oils. It was such a touching and beautiful experience, reminding me why I am doing what I am doing. So beautiful to see the kids enjoy the smell of the oils, learn how they can nurture each-other and themselves.

So grateful that I am able to share what I know.

Thank you to Jenny for inviting me to come and thank you to the principal and teachers at the school to be open-minded to concepts like yoga and therapeutic essential oils in their school.

Fascia & Life

As most of you know in yin yoga especially we work intensively on the fascia, one of the most prominent tissues in our body. Its a bit like a spiderweb holding our whole body together. It encases organs, muscles, its around joints, bones etc. Through the fascia go water-rich channels and most of those channels match with energy meridians that are stimulated in Acupuncture or Acupressure.

If we stimulate the Fascia in one place, it has follow on effects throughout the whole body, because the Fascia is connected throughout the body.

We need to stimulate those tissues, because if there is too little stimulation then the tissue degenerates and if we stimulate it too much (over-exercising, repetitive movements for example) then there is deterioration, so we need to find balance as to how much is a good stimulation.

When I was flying back yesterday from the course I had the thought, that we really not only have a body fascia, but also an energetic fascia that connects us all to all that is. Every decision in our life, every move has a flow on effect for us and others. If we don’t stimulate ourselves intellectually, spiritually, creatively, then there is degeneration of that area, if we are overstimulated, then there is deterioration. Sometimes we need to contact, sometimes we need to stretch and sometimes we just need to stay in neutral. It is also a fun thing to reflect how everything you do, say and even think has a flow on effect for others.

I really feel like I have stimulated and stretched not only my bodily fascia but also my energetic fascia over the last week, learning lots of new things, meeting new people, being inspired, being out of my comfort. Now I am slowly contracting again, back in my comfort to digest the information and experiences until I am ready to stretch and stimulate again.

Thank you to Yin Therapy Karin & Markus for the fabulous course and thank you to my fellow yoginis and yogis – so nice to connect with you. Thank you to my family for supporting me to go away and thank you to my students for supporting me to be able to do what I do. Grateful!

Wishing you a good week. x

MY DRUG

I don’t have many “bad habits” anymore these days, but there is one “drug” I have difficulty giving up. COFFEE. I love coffee, it tastes so good, it gives me comfort, its a ritual of sitting down and really enjoying it. And I do enjoy it, however I know my body doesn’t particularly feel the same.

Here is a good article from our local nutrition guru Ben Warren. Libby Weather also touches on the effects of coffee in her book “The rushing Woman’s Syndrome”.

https://www.bepure.co.nz/blogs/…/what-need-know-about-coffee

I only have one to two per day, but I know it is an addiction, because I am finding it so hard to give it up or not have it. I know my addictive behavior patters because I used to be a chain smoker. I went cold turkey 5 days before my 30th birthday and replaced smoking with jogging. It was extremely hard to give up and it took me years to manage the moments when I really wanted to reach for a cigarette.

It is important to firstly acknowledge our addictive behaviors and then see if we can manage intake and eventually give up the habit.

I found with smoking it was not so much the nicotine, but the habits and routines of when I used to smoke. So its a good idea to change the habits and routines into healthy ones and have your support crew around you cheering you and making the giving up public might help to hold yourself accountable.

YOGA AND THE OCEAN

an excerpt from ancientsbest.co.nz which I love:

As an analogy, we can compare Yoga to that of the ocean; as a vast body of water; endless and eternal. In the ocean all is one and never separate though there are often waves. We can compare these waves to the human birth and the ego that makes us feel we are separate to others. As soon as we feel this separation we suffer all the limitations and fear of associating ourselves with the individualised body and mind, of being the wave and not the ocean. There are many waves but they are never separate from the ocean, and it is only due to karma/maya we (the body and mind) assume the form of waves.

NON VIOLENT COMMUNICATION

Book recommendation

I am just reading this book – only in the first chapter but already hooked.

Wanted to share this:

I never feel more given to
than when you take from me –
when you understand the joy I feel
giving to you.
And you know my giving isn’t done
to put you in my dept,
but because I want to live the love
I feel for you.
To receive with grace
my be the greatest giving.
There’s no way I can separate the two
When you give to me,
I give you my receiving.
When you take from me,
I feel so given to.

“Given to” 1978 by Ruth Bebermeyer from the album Given to.

When we give from the heart, we do so out of the joy that springs forth whenever we willingly enrich another person’s life. This kind of giving benefits both the giver and the receiver. The receiver enjoys the gift without worrying about the consequences that accompany gifts given out of fear, guit, shame, or desire for gain. The giver benefits from the enhanced self-esteem that results when we see our efforts contributing to someone’s well-being.

Non Violent Communication Summary:

NVC helps us connect with each other and ourselves in a way that allows our natural compassion to flourish. It guides us to reframe the way we express ourselves and listen to others by focusing our consciousness on four areas: what we are observing, feeling and needing, and what we are requesting to enrich our lives. NVC fosters deep listening, respect, and empathy and engenders a mutual desire to give from the heart. Some people use NVC to respond compassionately to themselves, some create greater depth in their personal relationships, and still others to build effective relationships at work or in the political area. Worldwide, NVC is used to mediate disputes and conflicts at all levels.

Filipa Hope gives courses on NVC in Hawk’es Bay, so if you feel drawn to this please get in touch with her. Its on my to list once I find a course that fits in my schedule. But this book is a good start.

I really think this should be taught in school.

Thank you Sandra Witzel for inspiring me to buy it! xxx

SWADHARMA

A few years back I pondered to have a personal blog, because I had the urge to start writing and share my journey. After searching for a bit I found the Sanskrit term “Swadharma”. I love the sanskrit language, because it is so meaningful. I have stopped that blog now, as it all merges in with my yoga journey. I have decided to call my yoga journey “heartspace” because thats what it all comes back to – connecting with our hearts. But I still love “Swadharma”. Just tidying up again in the office and came across the paper that I printed many years ago with the meaning of Swadharma:

“When we do something without authenticity, just to show off to another person, that is when we feel fear. But wen we do something that is authentic, from the heart, then there is no fear. This is what swadharma is – that action which is in harmony with your true nature. ” Sri Sri

I am so grateful and happy to have finally found my swadharma – being a mum, being a wife, engaging in my community in a positive way, teaching yoga and teaching about essential oils to help people feel better. So, so grateful to all the people who have helped me on this journey! Thank you!
