Dilution of essential oils

The correct dilution of essential oils is really important, especially for babies and children as well as people with sensitive skin / bodies.

Robert Tisserant is one one of the most well known aromatherapists in the world. You can find his dilution chart HERE.

Dr. Mariza Snyder in her book “Smart mom’s guide to essential oils” has the following recommendations:

  • 3-6 months / 1 % dilution / 2 drops per 10 ml carrier oil
  • 6 months to 1 year / 1% – 2% / 2-4 drops per 10 ml carrier oil
  • 1-5 years / 2 % / 4 drops per 10 ml carrier oil
  • 5-11 years / 5 % / 10 drops per 10 ml carrier oil
  • 11-17 years / 10% / 20 drops per 10 ml carrier oil
  • 17 plus years / 10-25% / 20-50 drops per 10 ml carrier oil

Valerie Ann Worwood in her book “Aromatheraphy for your child” recommends the following:

Drops of essential oil diluted in 30 ml of carrier oil

  • Newborn – 1-2 drops
  • 2-6 months – 1-3 drops
  • 6-12 months – 1-4 drops
  • 1-4 years – 5-8 drops
  • 5-7 years – 5-10 drops
  • 8-12 years – 5-12 drops

There are lots of different recommendations for dilutions available. Make sure you dilute really well for very young children and you can always make a small skin test on the inside of the wrist first.

Aromatic benefits of essentials oils

I just love the aromatic benefits of essentials oils, when used in the diffuser or on diffusing jewellery.

The sense of smell is our quickest sense. The olfactory glands in the nose will “transport” the microparticles of the essential oils to your limbic system of the brain. One of the functions of the limbic system of the brain is to regulate emotions. So its a very quick way to manage emotions & moods. Those microparticles arrive in your brain within seconds. Even if I apply an essential oil to the skin for the topical use I always inhale as well to get both the physical and aromatic benefits. I also have several bracelets and necklaces with plain wooden and lava beads, which absorb the oils and can hold the scent for around 4 days with some oils.

With the diffusers, which produce cold steam, the essential oil micro particles can stay in the air for up to 2 hours after the diffuser finished. Also with the diffusers you don’t actually damage the properties of the essential oils, as they are not heated up like in the old tealight diffusers. The essential oils are heat and light sensitive, so you can use them in cooking and in the tealight diffusers but you might knock off some of the healing properties of the oils and only have the aroma left.

I am sharing a passage from Valerie Anne Worwood’s book “the fragrant mind”, who is a well known Aromatherapist:

Hospitals and hospices need all the cheering up they can get, and essential oils are the perfect way to do it. Aside from the fact that they deodorize the clinical and organic smells, and make the place smell fresh and charming, they can (if you use the right ones) cut down cross-infections. Mr Fred Dale of Dale Air Products, who has twelve years experience in installing essential oil diffusion-systems in hospitals, museums and other public building, says that synthethic materials, when interacting with certain other smells, won’t get rid of those smells and you’ll end up with a worse smell than you started with.  Essential oils on the other hand work very well. And they have other benefits. At the Worcester Hospital in Hereford a six-month trial showed that vaporizing lavender through the air caused patients to sleep in a more natural pattern, and made them less aggressive during the day. More than that, over the six months, some patients were weaned off their tranquilizers – simply by substituting lavender in the atmosphere, which has a calming effect on the brain…..

In Japan aroma diffusing systems with essential oils have shown an increase in productivity with office workers. Some aromas reduced typing errors up to 54% with Lemon Essential oil!

This is a passage from Nadine Artemis’ book “Renegade Beauty”

The scientific findings of forest bathing teach us that it is beneficial for people to spend time in nature. Fortunately, phytoncides and essential oils share a similar constituent – those precious terpenes. Essential oils can provide forest therapy for us at home, every day, all year long regardless of the temperature or location. All essential oils are antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti fungal, and they all have a concentration of a terpene. Forest bathe at home by filing it with these lovely, aromatic molecules by diffusing or steaming the particles into the air.

There are thousands of articles and studies on the benefits of diffusing essential oils. They can help you sleep better, focus better, calm moods, uplift moods. You can also create aromatic anchors for example by diffusing a little Lavender when you get your baby to sleep. Baby will know Lavender means sleep time if you do it every time. That will carry on throughout their lives as they grow – they have an aromatic anchor of Lavender meaning sleep support. You can start creating new aromatic anchors anytime for yourself and your children.

Don’t touch the toxins – NZ Listener

I just bought the NZ listener this week 1-7th September, because the headline was “Don’t touch the toxins – Alarming new evidence about the chemicals & plastics we use at home”.

I have been passionate about reducing toxic loads for many years. We all have toxic loads these days, even new born babies, because they grow in bodies that are already in an unhealthy state. Every 3 rd person faces a cancer diagnosis, even more people chronic illness. These statistics are real and we have to learn to prevent rather than treat illness, to find causes, rather than suppressing symptoms.

I do recommend to grab yourself the Listener this week. Here are just a few snippets from the article

  • Humans use over 100,000 chemical elements and compounds, many of which have not been assessed for their effects on human health. (And even if they have been assessed as fairly save separately nobody has ever done long term studies on how the chemical cocktails we put in and on our bodies every day interact together…)
  • Triclosan is an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent used in more than 2,000 consumer products including soaps, toothpaste, detergents, mouthwashes and toys. Scientists have called for it to be banned, as it can affect hormone function, damage the liver and kidneys and is a suspected carcinogen. It has been shown to promote growth  of human breast cancer cells in lab dishes and breast cancer tumors in mice!
  • There is evidence by the University of Massachusetts on adverse effects on our gut health, focusing on inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer. Lead author Guadong Zhang found that feeding tricolosan to mice changed the composition of their gut microbiome, causing colon inflammation and accelerating the rate of colitis and the growth of tumors.
  • Triclosan has been named one of the top-10 pllutants in US rivers and been detected in the urine of 75% of the people tested.
  • The NZ Environmental protection authority is currently reviewing 300 chemicals of concern it would like banned or restricted (mainly herbicides and pesticides). Triclosan is not even on this list.
  • Bruce Blumberg of the University of California has evidence that chemical use is also contributing to the obesity epidemic. Blumberg has recently published a book The obesogen Effect – Why we eat less and exercise more but still struggle to loose weight.
  • The world health organisation has recognised that glyphosate (main ingredient of Roundup) is a possible carcinogen. There is also a possiblity that other additives in roundup may be reacting with the active ingredient, glyphosate, to accelerate carcinogenic effects. (Yet soooo many people are still spraying this all over their gardens, around their fruit trees….) Glyphosate is now even being found in breakfast cereals which are promoted to children.
  • Check out Alexx Stuart Low Tox Life website. She is also on facebook and instagram.

It is obviously not possible to cut all chemicals out of our lives, as over lots of them we don’t have any control. But we can clean up our houses and our bodycare products, we can switch to organic food, we can be mindful where our clothes come from and what they are made of, we can be mindful of the paints we use in our house, the sprays and fertilisers in our gardens. There are countless, easy ways to reduce your toxic load. The main thing is to take one step at the time, change one thing at the time and inform yourself.

Excerpt from Renegate Beauty by Nadine Artemis on aromatherapy

Currently, there is a philosophical resurgence of the mind-body connection arising in part from scientific studies that have connected the gut microbiome via the super-sensory-highway of our vagus nerve as they key healer of anxiety and depression disorders. Further studies show that inhaling aromatic molecules of essential oils elevates emotions in the mental spheres by whispering to the hypothalamus to choreograph a cascade of positive neurotransmitters in the hormonal, nervous, and immune systems. For example, the psychological effect of essential oils on the nervous system in relationship to anxiety and depression was studied by Professor Paolo Rovesti of Milan University. He tested a variety of essential oils  and their restorative effect on people with hysteria, anxiety, and nervous depression. He used both oral administration and inhalation. The most effective oils to alleviate anxiety were bergamot, lime, neroli, petitgrain, lavender, marjoram, rose, cypress.  The oils he used for depression were lemon, orange, jasmin, ylang ylang and sandalwood.

Dr. Daniel Penoel, a french physician proficient in medical aromatherapy, stated that “Aromatic medicine could eventually become the ecological medicine of the 21st century by balancing earth, water and atmospheric ecosystems.”

Essential oils protect out body, skin, and mouth much in the same way that they protect the plant against pathogens with their bacteriostatic nature. Antiquity appreciated medicinal plant virtues, and now we have gas chromoatographs to map out how each essence is composed of hundreds of special substances that defy the development of bacterial resistance, encourage immunity, act as first-aid responders, and boost beauty by delivering nutrients and stimulating cells.

    Whipped Body Cream

This body cream is really well absorbed into the skin and not as greasy as plain oil. Here is the recipe:

75 g Shea butter (I have also used Coconut Butter when I didn’t have Shea – works as well)

75 g Extra virgin, organic Coconut oil

50 g Carrier Oil (Almond, Jojoba, Macadamia – anything you fancy really)

Add essential oils of your choice – between 25 – 35 drops

I use 10 drops Frankincense, 5 drops Mhyrr, 5 drops Manuka, 5 Geranium, 5 Lavender, 1 Blue Tansy. You don’t need to be super fancy with your essential oil selection. I have a big selection, so make the most of it, using a variety. But you could just use a mix of Lavender and Frankincense or just one oil. I try to avoid using Citrus oils in my body and face creams, due to their sun / photo sensitivity.

Add the Shea Butter, Cococonut Oil, Carrier Oil to a metal bowl and place over pot with steaming water to melt gently.

Once melted let cool down on bench and once coolish drop your essential oils in. Essential oils are heat sensitive, so you don’t want to loose their healing properties by dropping them into the hot base.

Put in fridge and cool down until almost solidified. It needs to feel thick and firm when touched

Use electric hand mixer to whip until it looks like whipped cream (most ingredients are edible, but don’t be tempted 😉

Fill into sealable glass jars (not plastic) and let set. Mine got really hard over night. In summer it can transition back to liquid consistency. You can still use it, it just doesn’t look as pretty.

This recipe was adapted from the book “The inspired little book” by Krissy Ballinger.

Silent Retreat – sharing my experience

I have had a lot of people asking me how my silent retreat was, so thought I would write a recap here.

Firstly I would like to thank Radha Iveta for holding the space so beautifully for us all. Radha is a local yoga teacher and her wisdom, insights and gentleness speak for themselves. I highly recommend to check into one of her sessions or retreat. I found this feather when I came home and took the dog for a walk – it reminded me of you Radha

I loved removing all the external noise, I loved not having to engage in communication, I loved not have a mobile phone or device, I loved having meals cooked for me – thank you Tara Spice, I loved sitting for several hours every day in meditation to process and just be, I loved the retreat centre and the gardens and to just be in my own bubble for a few days without any external stimulation. Once we broke silence after 3 days it felt way too soon and I was overwhelmed by the noise and information.

One thing that strongly emerged for me is how deeply I love my family and that is doesn’t feel right to often prioritize work over time I could be spending with them. So one of my take away’s is to be really mindful of what I am going to do with my time and which things I can let go of.

Another thing that emerged is to weed out my social media feeds. I want to focus more on what I have to offer on my pages, rather than taking in unhealthy amounts of information that I can’t really process and realistically don’t need in my life.

I would also like to establish at least 2 silent get away’s for myself every year, to be able to reflect properly on what I do, what can stay, what needs to go, what I want to invite, what I can let go of.

I realised how much energy we put every day into listening to others and into communicating ourselves and processing all that information. I personally need space for myself alot to accommodate for my introvert tendencies. I get overwhelmed by too much external stimulation and that shows itself as myself becoming stressed and grumpy. As much as I would like to spend more time with friends or make new ones at this stage in my life, there are just not enough hours in the day to get time for myself, cope with my workload, the household, the kids etc. I really need more meditation and quiet spells – they are so nourishing and good for me.

I also felt I really connected more intimately with my heartspace. I felt a real softness & gentleness and I really want to bring that into my daily life. Often when I get stressed and feel overwhelmed the safest place to let the steam out is at home and that doesn’t feel right. So I want to bring that soft and gentleness into all areas of my life – my communication, my interactions, my work, my self compassion when I stuff things up.

What also emerged very strongly is that I want to be vegetarian again. I was vegetarian for 15 years and tried to eat fish and meat, but it doesn’t feel right. So that will take some re-organising in our household and in my mind.

At the end of the retreat I drew 3 cards from inspiration deck and they were all so relevant to my reflections during the retreat:

⚛️ Attack, Pain, Fear, Judgement, and any form of separation are merely calls for help. (note to self: ask for help, offer help when noticing myself or others in that situation)
⚛️ There is a stream of love supporting my dreams. (note to self: meditate more to be clear on what my dreams are and TRUST)
⚛️ When I lean on the faith of the Universe, Peace becomes real. (note to self: TRUST more, act from the heart, practice softness & gentleness)

Radha is offering another retreat from 30th October until 4th November at Strathean Retreat in Otaki. You can see more info on heartawakening.org or e-mail her: [email protected].

    Breast Massage

After a weekend at the Wellness Sanctuary with the beautiful Maria from Earth Bliss- Flower essences I feel really inspired to add breast massage to my daily regime. I have done this before but very halfheartedly.

This weekend was such an inspiration – all about womans health and how we can look after our health in preventative way, not starting when its already too late. Check out Maria’s Facebook page, she is making beautiful beauty products and massage oils.

With breast health as far as I am concerned its really important, to give your breasts braless time. I have always hated bras and never found one that is actually comfortable even with fittings. These days I just wear sports bras and find them still constricting. To allow the lymph to flow freely from our breasts bra free time is really important and the breast massage really supports moving lymph and keeping the breast tissues healthy. Breast massage doesn’t mean rubbing over them two or three times. Just google the subject and you can find lots of inspirations as to what movements around the breasts are supportive and spend some time with them.

I have made my own breast massage oil and share the recipe here:

The carrier oil is Macadamia Oil and the essential oils I added in a 15 ml bottle are 5 drops Frankincense, 5 crops Cypress, 5 drops Grapefruit, 1 drop Wild Orange, 1 drop Lemon. There are citrus oils in this blend, so make sure you don’t sunbath with skin exposed for 12-24 hours (only the area where the oil was applied.

You can read an article of Robert Tisserant here, a well known aromatherapist, on research that suggests that citrus oils can have a preventative effect on breast cancers, because of lemonene, a major constituent in citrus oils.

Also antiperspirants or common deodorants with Aluminium in them are really bad for your health in general but especially your breasts. The sweat actually needs to flow and aluminium is linked to Alzheimers and other diseases. So please look at getting a more natural deodorant. I use either Weleda deodorant or essential oils. The doTerra Purify Blend diluted with Fraktionated Coconut oils is a nice option you can try as a deodorant replacement.

Lets take our power back and implement nourishing rituals into our daily lives that prevent disease rather than having to heal from illness.

I am so grateful for all the people in my life who share their knowledge to empower me and my family to take responsibility for our healthcare and find fun and nourishing ways to implement selfcare in our daily lives.

Here are a couple of articles about breast massage: https://chopra.com/…/the-benefits-of-therapeutic-breast-mas…
    https://beducated.com/mag/breast-massage/
